Our very first Chinese musical – “The Three Billy Goats Gruff”

I don’t deny, we have always been focusing on English, English and English mainly. We speak in English, we read English books and magazines, we watched English shows, etc. We do have a little connection with Chinese. For instance, speaking to elderly, watching selective Chinese shows.

Even for musicals and plays, we have been catching those in English too! This time round, we are making the exception by watching a Chinese musical: The three billy goats gruff. To tell you the truth, not only the smarties, is my very first time watching a Chinese musical.

Smarties can’t wait for the show to get started and as for me, I wonder how much do they understand. Amazingly, not only the smarties, even the adults were all very engrossed in the show. Why?

1. Musically crafted
Their voices is like the sound of music. They sang so well that all of us were engrossed. The music played and sang throughout the show was really catchy. Not forgetting the tap-dancing. It was really jazzy…

2. Engaging
Besides just sitting and watching the play. We even get to get up and exercise too! The audiences unknowingly get to participate or get involved throughout the play. It’s interesting to see how they manage to grab everyone’s attention.

3. Good moral story
In addition to enjoying the play, we get to take something back as well. The smarties didn’t really catch it directly, I got to explained to them in a simpler and detailed manner.

So what’s the moral story behind?
i. Grass is not always greener on the other side. In the play, they have mentioned the Chinese idiom: 知足常乐  (zhi zu chang le). It means contentment and happiness. Happy and Content are always together. We, humans, have to limit our desire and create a harmonious inner self and living space. We need to be content and enjoy our happiness.

ii. Another moral story behind this is, use one’s brain. When we encountered any issues/problems, we must always think about how to resolve it.

At the end of the play, we get to take a picture with the cast and got a little momento home. So sweet!
